Classics thrives

In the Classics Department, we were excited to participate in the Classical Association’s competition exploring why studying Classics is important. The competition was for students to write a manifesto, or create a poster, or a video, which gave them a lot of creative license.

One student in each Year 9 Latin class took part. Sachin (9G) wrote a wonderful manifesto, explaining the wide-reaching significance of studying Classics. Adrij (9C) created a brilliant poster from the point of view of the Ancient Greeks and Ancient Romans, discussing why Classics should be studied.

Both students have been awarded 20 house points each for their incredible work. As well as this, successful entrants will also have the opportunity to take part in the final on Saturday 15 March, in London, where they will be able to argue their case in front of a panel of judges. All entrants are also entered into a prize draw, and here in the Classics department, we wish them the best of luck!

The conclusion of Sachin’s manifesto is attached below:

The classics are vital not just for their historical significance but for the rich insights they offer into human nature, society, and the world. From shaping the foundations of Western thought to providing timeless reflections on love, morality, and the human condition, these works continue to resonate with modern audiences. By studying the classics, we not only connect with the past but gain valuable tools for understanding ourselves and our contemporary world. Their relevance is as strong today as it was centuries ago, providing a bridge to a deeper understanding of culture, history, and the complexities of human life. As long as we continue to engage with these works, the classics will remain an invaluable part of our intellectual and cultural heritage, continually offering lessons, insights, and inspiration for generations to come.
