Developing skills and leadership at RAF recruits' camp
This year's RAF Recruits' Camp for Year 9 cadets took a slightly different format from previous years. Due to the current geopolitical situation, it was not possible to hold the camp at RAF Halton, as has traditionally been the case. Nevertheless, the three-day programme provided a varied and engaging introduction to RAF life, with a range of activities designed to develop the cadets' knowledge, practical skills and understanding of military service.
One of the highlights was a visit to the RAF Museum in Colindale. Cadets had the opportunity to explore the RAF's history through its extensive collection of aircraft, including the Vulcan bomber, which played a significant role during the Falklands War. The visit also provided an insight into the technological developments that have shaped modern military aviation, allowing cadets to appreciate the capabilities and sophistication of contemporary RAF aircraft.
The remaining two days, held at school, focused on developing a range of core CCF skills. Training covered drill, first aid, military knowledge, aircraft recognition, leadership and RAF music, the latter being a new addition to the CCF curriculum. The programme concluded with a series of practical assessments, including a command task to evaluate teamwork and communication, a mock first aid assessment and a drill test.
The camp provided a valuable opportunity for Year 9 cadets to develop their confidence, knowledge and practical abilities, while also allowing the NCOs involved to strengthen their own organisational and leadership skills through planning and delivering the programme.
A huge thank you to all the officers involved, particularly Flight Lieutenant Paschoud, for making the experience possible and providing such a valuable opportunity for both the recruits and the NCO team.
