Junior Mathematical Olympiad

Last May, students across the country - and some from abroad - took part in the Junior Mathematical Challenge (JMC), with a few top-performers qualifying for the next round; the Junior Mathematical Olympiad (JMO).

George (Year 9) shares his experience participating in the JMO below:

"I was pleased to qualify for the JMO and was awarded a Silver medal, achieving a score of 44 out of 60.

 

I really enjoyed the Olympiad because it gave me the opportunity to attempt new and challenging problems that required deeper thinking.

 

The questions were designed to stretch our understanding and encouraged me to approach problems in ways I might not have considered before. We were given two hours to complete six questions, which I found ideal, as it allowed time to think carefully about each problem.

 

One of the most satisfying aspects of the experience was solving difficult questions. There is a real sense of achievement when everything finally comes together, and reaching the final answer feels especially rewarding. One of my favourite questions was Question 6. Although I found it extremely challenging and was unable to solve it during the paper, I really enjoyed reading the official solutions afterwards.

 

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this year’s JMO and look forward to participating in the Intermediate Mathematical Challenge (IMC) this year!"
