Read it and sweep!

On the second Tuesday of the Easter holidays, the reading team assembled to give our library a long-overdue spring clean. We began in earnest, cleaning shelves, emptying tables, and moving books, but quickly ran into a wall: the Dewey Decimal System. The friend of librarians worldwide, it is used to organise books into categories and subcategories, and sub-subcategories...you get the idea.

This was a novel problem (pun intended) that posed a bit of a challenge. But we rose to it and after a 5-minute crash course from an old poster we dug up (and a fair amount of judging books by their covers) we were self-certified experts and I can confidently tell you that if you want to find a biography in the library, just head to the non-fiction section and look for a book with 920 on its spine and there you’ll have it!

Two hours later we had finally sorted the books out and it was looking all write. From there, the plot thickened as we shifted our attention to the aesthetics of the library, setting out to introduce a new display, reorganise the tables and move the sofa and beanbags to create a cosier, more inviting space. All manner of permutations and combinations of the tables were discussed, with ideas ranging from a pentagon to a semicircle, but we eventually came to the sound conclusion that a triangle/star/amorphous blob looked best.

Finally, the best part of the day arrived, and it was not surveying the result of our careful tidying and reorganisation of the library. It was the pizza. Admiring our handiwork, we devoured the pizza and began drafting the next chapter of the library’s development.

To cut a long story short (sorry I can’t help myself), it was a really rewarding day. A big thank you to Ms Paschoud for giving up a day of the Easter holidays to help us out and keep everything running smoothly. If you haven’t yet seen the reorganised library, I would highly recommend checking it out - it’s really turned a new page!
